Thunderbolts. Lightning. Very very...well you know the rest.

 

Actually, there's no thunderbolts or lightning in this chapter but there may as well be as we enter perhaps the darkest chapter in all ASOIAF. Down in the depths of shadow we reunite with Aeron as he undergoes...quite a bit. Ancient trauma, physical torture, questions that you think bend the mind until the visions kick in and show you what true brain shattering is. And all of it is swirling around and around a figure cloaked in darkness save for one terrible red eye. Yes this is the chapter of Euron Greyjoy and all that he could be about to inflict on us as circumstances go from awful to much much worse.

 

Hop aboard the Isle, if you dare, for conversations on the battle between ironborn and Redwyne, what the plan for Oldtown might be, the parts of Oldtown Euron doesn't even know about, maester-fallout, white-fire-women, reverse engineering, and talking about Asha because we need at least one damn positive out of this thing.

100 Questions on The Winds of Winter Part 2: Questions 11-20

Emily and myself return for another ten questions blazing across the entire spectrum of The Winds of Winter! We've got sword names, we've got early exits, we've got the Vale, Stoneheart, and horny Tywin?? No thanks.

Scraps and Scrolls- TWOW Mercy

Today we come upon one of the most most wonderfully written chapters of well. As enchanting as it is chilling. As thrilling as it expansive. Finally, after far too long away, we return to Arya as she takes on her latest role.

While we see her live the life of Mercy and prepare for a big performance we also learn even more about Braavos and the life of the smallfolk. We wonder who her next target might be and how far she's fallen into the role. And then as our eyes our opened we are rewarded with one of the greatest, darkest acts of vengeance in the series. Arya steps to the stage.

 

So hop upon the Isle once more for thoughts on what Nymeria might be up to, the appreciation for George giving us an entirely different viewpoint of how this world works, whether this will be the 'hook' that drags Arya back to Westeros, and the many possible consequences that Arya, Braavos, and Westeros might face because of this.

That plus general love for Arya because...well, she's great.

Scraps and Scrolls- TWOW Arianne II

Dorne? We don't need no stinking Dorne. Today we're going back to the Stormlands! In our second trip to Arianne land we get back to a long-forgotten kingdom, visit the Weeping Town, go caving, make contact with the Golden Company, re-meet Haldon Halfmaester and learn PLENTY about the next steps of Jon Con & Aegon. That, plus the fact they don't have any dragons. Uh oh.

 

As Arianne continues her development journey and thinks further on this monumental decision, she also keeps trying to reign in her cousin, accepts the danger of her position, and even (maybe) moves past the immaturity of the Quentyn Question to what it actually means if Dany isn't coming.

 

So step aboard the Isle for all that plus conversations on Horny Feathers, the symbolism of the Weeping Town's Tale, the political after effects of bringing the Golden Company to Westeros, Daemon bravery, Elia bravery, the beauty of the Rainwood, the mysticism of the historical caves and so, so much talk about the Stormlands and ESPECIALLY my beloved Storm's End. Scraps and Scrolls- TWOW Arianne I

Welcome to the 2nd century here on the Isle. Today we travel all the way back for long-awaited Dorne to chat about an even more awaited Arianne. Yes we return to southern and central Westeros to focus on one of the biggest storylines in Winds: the return of dragons to Westeros. This time we do it in the framework of Arianne stepping away from her home, into the limelight, to ascertain the truth about a certain heritage claim taking place in the Stormlands.

 

The Targaryens have their prints all over this chapter. As does Quentyn. As does Doran. And a couple of new characters too. There's that, the pressure Arianne holds, the politics of Dorne, potential dreams, and the focus on maturation since the last Arianne we saw.

 

So hop aboard the Isle for all that plus yet more tourney talk, what Dornish family wants what, Sylva Santagar theories, what future trouble Arianne could get into, and a whole bunch of Daenerys talk as we finally begin to merge!

Returned from our break and ready for a new era comes this, the 99th episode of THE ISLE OF FACES. After long last, we return to our dearest Sansa. In our longest Winds preview chapter yet we are back in a Vale on the edge. Winter is held at bay for now, but we are switching the bloody sands of Meereen for the deepest court intrigues of the Valemen.

Sansa Stark, now oceans deep in the persona of Alayne Stone, is still playing the mother role to Sweetrobin, but change is afoot as the Knights of the Vale arrive to compete in a new tourney. Among them is Harry the Heir, the man who could mean complete change to many. He, says Petyr Baelish, is Sansa's mission. He is the next rung on the ladder. Today we see how Sansa is more than prepared for the challenge.

Step aboard the Isle for a reminder of what is coming in Episode 100, a discussion on Sansa's own gatekeeping sins in terms of Sweetrobin, how tactically brilliant the idea of a tourney is for winning the Vale, what Petyr Baelish might be planning on the political, westerosi-wide scene, and just how Sansa's latest skills interact with her true self. Scraps and Scrolls- TWOW Barristan I & II

On this, our big announcement day, we are also visiting the Winds preview chapters once more. We are sticking in Slaver's Bay for more Battle of Fire talk as Barristan Selmy first prepares for the coming battle, especially in the care of his young trainees and his own tactics, but we finally, finally, get to see the start of the battle.

 

In Barristan II the forces of Meereen roar out of the city gates to face down the Yunkish army, and at their head is a kingsguard atop a silver horse. The action comes left right and centre as Barry fights tooth and nail for everything Daenerys Targaryen brought to this part of the world. He rides for justice, he rides for his men, he rides for fire.

 

In amongst all that we have a bunch of strategy talk, yet more condemnation of the Yunkish command, what Barristan is trying to make up for, the three thousand possible futures to come after the battle, and mostly about how damn cool this guy is and how lucky we are to see the battle through his eyes.

 

It is finally here!

Scraps and Scrolls- TWOW Tyrion I & II

The Isle of Faces is BACK!

We return with a look through to the uncertain futures, the promises of plots and dramas and stories still to come, the drip feed on which we sustain ourselves as we look to the horizon. I refer of course to the pre-released The Winds of Winter preview chapters. And today we start with a bang.  Not only our biggest character with a preview chapter, but two of them! (Well kinda). We rejoin Tyrion on the edge of a devastating battle as he tries to swing fortune back to his side before the chaos reaches him and all the horror with it.

Come aboard for a hearty welcome back as well as guesses on Tyrion's latest Cyvasse game, what the dragons could get up to, and how two sellsword companies might react to one another when they clash- especially if Tyrion should meet a certain Dornish pair. And that's just Tyrion I.

In Tyrion II we reflect on the emotional trauma of battle that has left an imprint on Tyrion. How guilt assaults him in this most precious of moments. How him FINALLY dealing with his Shae issues actually goes terribly, terribly wrong as his anger lashes out at Penny. And of course...HOW DAMN STUPID THE YUNKISH LEADERSHIP IS! IT'S WORSE THAN EVER. THE MAN'S NAME IS PUDDING FACE!
